Summer reading challenge launch

Children across the city have been up to mischief this summer with the Beano themed Summer Reading Challenge. The Challenge to read at least 6 library books over the summer was taken up by over 8,500 children, with nearly 5,200 of them completing the challenge and being rewarded with a certificate and medal. One lucky winner, Lina from Hulme Street Library, scooped the big prize of a bike, and there were book goody bags for winners at every library in recognition of their special effort in reading and getting involved. The Challenge was supported by a lively summer programme of activities, crafts and entertainment.

One parent from Abraham Moss said ‘The SRC… is fantastic and helped my children to get confidence in reading… and activities in the library give them something new every day to explore and have fun!’

Our highlights in numbers:

8,541 joined the Summer Reading Challenge (5,178 completed)
957 new library members
9835 activity attendees (children and adults)
90 young volunteers contributed 944 hours
