This autumn every reception age child will receive a copy of the fantastic book The Runaway Pea by Kjartan Poskitt and Alex Willmore thanks to our partnership with BookTrust. Manchester Libraries works with BookTrust to facilitate the delivery of these packs to over 7,000 children starting school in September 2020.

It’s time for tea! But this plate full of veggies are VERY shocked when one little pea decides that, no, he does NOT want to be eaten, thank you very much. It’s not time for tea; it’s time for adventure!

The Runaway Pea is a super fun story to read together, with lots of playful words used in the lovely rhyming text. There are lots of things to talk about, from the detail in the pictures to the range of emotions the pea experiences on his journey. And giggles are very much guaranteed.

Read along with Mona from our Children’s team and have a look at her pea activity to do at home!

The book is delivered inside a special Time to Read pack that each child gets to keep and take home. There is also a message for families about the importance of shared reading, alongside practical tips and advice to help them bring the story to life at home.

Manchester Libraries have worked in partnership with BookTrust for over 20 years to improve access to books and improve literacy within our city. BookTrust is the UK’s largest reading charity and reaches 3.9 million children each year with books, resources and support to help develop a love of reading.
