Staying active during lockdown can be a challenge so we have put together a few ideas on things to do both outside and at home. If you wanted to try some new local walking routes or having a dance at home, there is something that everyone can try.

TfGM Walking Routes

The Manchester Green Trail has 14 walking routes which circumnavigate the City of Manchester which connect the City’s woodlands, parks, and open spaces. The trails with a map can be downloaded or used on mobile devices.

The Greater Manchester Way is designed to encourage people to consider walking in their everyday lives. All you have to do is enter your postcode to find out the routes in your local area.

Please be aware of the current coronavirus regulations before setting off on your walk.

Get on Your Bike

In Greater Manchester there are hundreds of miles of traffic-free cycle paths and very quiet roads. There are 10 downloadable cycling maps, so you will be able to find a route to suit your abilities easily in your local area.

Check out the National Cycle Network which has a network of signed paths and routes for walking, cycling, wheeling and exploring outdoors. Find the perfect place to enjoy the outdoors that is easily accessible close to your home.

Couch to 5k

This nine-week programme is designed for beginners to gradually build up their running ability so they can eventually run 5km without stopping and contains a series of podcasts recommended by the NHS.

Consisting of three runs a week the programme gradually builds up intensity and gives you a choice of coaches – from the NHS’s Laura, to multiple Olympic champion Michael Johnson.

Get Kids Moving

A selection of free get kids moving workouts that put the fun back into fitness and help engage kids. Children can train alongside their favourite superheroes from the comfort of their home. Keep your kids fit, healthy and more importantly having fun.

Synergy Dance

A free online programme designed to reach out to those communities who need it most to provide activities to carry out at home to prevent isolation and keep fit.

Classes are designed for people with special needs including autism and cerebral palsy, visually impaired and blind, the disability community, people with long term health conditions and the elderly.

Dance Like a Mother

Dance Like a Mother is a Community Interest Company that is set up as a support group for parents to come together, gain confidence and feel happier.

There are many different classes available from baby wearing dance, pregnancy yoga and adult online exercise classes. Classes are active, but low impact and more about having fun, bonding with your baby or doing something for yourself. The routines are easy to follow and it’s just about having fun for parents with their little ones aged 8 weeks to 2 years.

Classes are £6 each and are run over Zoom, there is also the option to donate a class to families who might not otherwise be able to take part.

There are a number of free online kids exercise classes available.

Get Buzzin with Bez

Happy Mondays star Bez is launching his own online fitness classes. The maraca-shaking dancer, famed for his onstage antics as part of the Madchester era band Bez hopes to lose his lockdown weight and help to motivate others.

Join Bez on his mad journey or just sit on the sofa and have a good laugh at him. At the very least he knows he will be making people smile, at best he will be helping people get fit and mentally happier alongside him.
