This year we’re changing our children’s library cards and YOU are invited to send us your very own design. Do you have what it takes to join professional children’s book illustrator, Ian Morris and be one of our new library card creators? The three winning designs will be made into library cards for Manchester Libraries.

Read Manchester and Manchester Libraries have collaborated to launch this exciting new opportunity for children and young people to redesign the city’s library cards for its younger readers.

The Our Year: Our Card competition is aimed at budding illustrators and library lovers aged between 5 and 16. The scheme was launched on Wednesday 16 February at Central Library with local children’s illustrator Ian Morris, who also created the Wythenshawe Park Story Trail.

Through their designs children are being asked to channel their inner creativity and let their imaginations run wild – the more imaginative and colourful the better! The drawings and designs are a response to the central question of ‘what does a library mean to you?’ From favourite book characters, to reading with families, to escapism, we want to know what children and young people associate with libraries and reading.

Submissions will be judged in three age categories: 5 to 8, 9 to 11 and 12 to 16. A winner will be selected from each age category by illustrator Ian Morris and an esteemed panel of judges.

The children and young people who win the competition will have their design made into a poster (just for them) and of course, 1,000’s of library cards will be printed with their design. Winners will also receive a £40 voucher to spend on art supplies, which has been kindly donated by Northern-Quarter based art shop, Fred Aldous.
