Join the rhythm of reading this summer!
As the long, sunny days of summer approach, there’s no better time to encourage children to explore new ideas and stories than through the joy of reading. This year, the 2026 Summer Reading Challenge – Read to the Beat, invites children and families to turn up the volume on books and discover a world where stories and music come together in perfect harmony. Running from 1 July to 12 September, this free programme is designed to make reading fun, flexible and rewarding for children of all ages.
What Is the Summer Reading Challenge?
The Summer Reading Challenge is a national initiative delivered by The Reading Agency, in partnership with public libraries. It encourages children to keep reading during the summer holidays. Children can borrow and read any library books they like, whether they’re stories, facts, poetry, or graphic novels, they all count! They can set their own reading goal and enjoy working towards earning their medal and certificate as they progress through the challenge.
How to Take Part
Getting started couldn’t be easier! Visit your local library to sign up for the Summer Reading Challenge, which is open to children aged 4 and over, with a special Mini Challenge available for little ones aged 0 to 3. When your child joins, they’ll receive a collector card and some fun goodies to get them started.
Rewards, Prizes & Fun Incentives
Reading comes with plenty of exciting rewards this summer:
- Read 4 or more books to be entered into a prize draw to win £100 or £50 vouchers and book bundles
- Goody bags for winners at each library
- Special effort prizes for children nominated by their local library
Book Review Competition
Children aged 4 to 16 can take part in the exciting Book Review Competition by either writing about or drawing a picture inspired by a book they have read. It’s a fantastic way for young readers to share their thoughts and creativity while celebrating their favourite stories. There are some brilliant prizes up for grabs, including book bundles, Kindles, and art supplies. Entry forms are available at your local library or can be completed online, making it easy for everyone to get involved.
Read Anytime with BorrowBox
Prefer reading on the go? No problem! With the BorrowBox app, children can enjoy free eBooks and eAudiobooks anytime, anywhere, making it easy to keep the reading momentum going over the summer. They can also track their reading digitally as they progress through the challenge. Just remember to ask your local library for a collector card and let them know once the challenge has been completed so they can celebrate your child’s achievement.
Can’t Visit the Library? Join Online!
You can still take part in all the fun by joining online through The Reading Agency’s Summer Reading Challenge website. Simply register online (remember to select Manchester as your location option) and your child will be able to track their progress from home.
More Than Just Reading
Throughout the summer, libraries will also host free activities, events, and workshops, giving children the chance to engage with music or stories in creative ways. Details will be shared in July via Loads to Do and in your local library.
Why Reading Matters
One in five children struggles to read by age 11, but reading for fun helps improve skills and supports success at school. Choosing enjoyable books builds reading habits, and regular reading boosts mental health, wellbeing and empathy. The challenge also supports the National Year of Reading, inspiring families to make reading part of everyday life.
Start your reading journey on 1 July and we’ll see you at the library!
