Manchester Central Library continues to host its Chess Club, now well into its second year of running! Players play from 4:30 to 7 on Tuesdays and Thursdays, just behind the café on the ground floor, and anyone of any age and skill level is welcome to join. With a relaxed, come-and-go atmosphere, it regularly sees 50 players across the evening. Turn up alone or with friends, challenge somebody to a game, or sit at a free board and wait to be challenged. Being such a popular event, it won’t take long!
Beginners are free to come along and learn, play or watch — no sign-up required. However, we can’t always guarantee someone will be on hand to teach individuals how to play, so having just a very basic understanding of the game beforehand (how the pieces move, the game’s objectives) is advised.
We have also recently acquired a new board and pieces for visually-impaired players. If that’s you and you have any questions, drop an email to francesca.donald@manchester.gov.uk, tom.thorp@manchester.gov.uk, or just show up on the night and seek a member of staff. We’ll be happy to have you play with us.
