Libraries of Sanctuary

This month Manchester Libraries has been re-awarded Libraries of Sanctuary Status. The award, presented by Manchester City of Sanctuary, recognises and celebrates libraries that go above and beyond to welcome sanctuary seekers and refugees, demonstrating solidarity and inclusivity and the benefits of a welcoming culture to everyone. The award is reassessed every 3 years. We originally received this award in 2021 and are delighted to have been re-accredited for another 3 years.

Manchester’s libraries are the beating hearts of their communities. They are all vibrant places used by the cross section of the population. As well as providing a warm welcome to asylum seekers and refugees, libraries also commit to celebrating diversity and spreading understanding of the lives of sanctuary seekers. Libraries staff have received training about what it means to be seeking sanctuary to increase their understanding. Several asylum seekers have volunteered within libraries over the last three years, from digitising photos in Archives+ to helping deliver events and workshops.

We held events exploring the refugee experience, or themes of identity and belonging celebrating our diverse communities such as International Mother Language Day and Refugee Week.

We will continue to create engaging activities and offer support to people seeking sanctuary and other new arrivals in our communities.
