Library of the Month: Miles Platting Community Library

Miles Platting Community Library is Library of the Month! Set in the heart of Miles Platting, the community library serves the local residents. We offer age-friendly drop-ins, Tiny Tots and Toddler Time, IT drop-ins, regular craft sessions and much more.

The local children love the mobile LEGO shelf repurposed from an old library trolley. The LEGO Club is on a Saturday 10am-1pm but the trolley is always on the move, ready for building any time the library is open.

Two of the local children expressed an interest in Niall’s childhood puppet collection so he brought them in and they then all built a paper mache theatre using cardboard, buttons and lots of PVA glue!

On four separate occasions throughout the year, in conjunction with Jigsaw Housing, we put on fun days for the local residents providing activities, food and drink. In what is becoming a regular feature at Christmas, the real life reindeer are a big hit.

Last summer, Canal & River Trust delivered to us two large kayaks and four instructors who took the local children, under supervision, on trips in the canal basin.

Recently, we celebrated VE Day with an afternoon tea attended by the local Grand Day Out and age-friendly group. The cakes were all made in our on-site kitchen and they were enjoyed outside in the lovely spring air.

We are lucky enough to have six donated sewing machines all in full working order that are often brought out for our customers to brush up on their sewing skills.

Doing our bit for the local environment, we operate in conjunction with the Canal & River Trust, a bike loan library on the last Saturday of every month. Fully maintained bikes of all sizes are loaned out free of charge to anybody who may be in need of one. This has proved very popular with local mums and dads who do not have a bike of their own but their children do meaning they can all go out together on a bike ride.

We always put on fabulous displays relating to events such as Refugee Week, Empathy Day, World Book Day and currently the Summer Reading Challenge which has just begun on 1 July and runs until 13 September. The theme this year is Story Garden and is illustrated by Dapo Adeola.
