Celebrate Black History Month with us

The official 2024 Black History Month theme, Reclaiming Narratives, celebrates the crucial power of stories as a means of empowering, enriching and validating the experiences of the Black community. 

We’ve got a fantastic programme of events lined up here at Manchester Libraries to celebrate Black History Month.   Join us for panel discussions, theatre and creative workshops. 

  • Wednesday 2 October  @ Central Library Reimagining Black History Month featuring Gary Younge https://shorturl.at/bhQuP . This event is organised by the Ahmed Iqbal Ullah Race Centre, University of Manchester
  • Thursday 3 October @ Central Library Knock Out Blow – Library Live – an evening of art and discussion dedicated to the life and legacy of Len Johnson
  • Saturday 5 October @ Withington Library Men’s Health event – this event is for Caribbean & African Men – friends and family also welcome! Try some free tasty Caribbean food whilst finding out ways to improve your health and wellbeing.
  • Thursday 24 October @ Central Library, 1pm-3pm: Get creative at our free craft activities inspired by Black History Month. Join Tina Ramos Ekongo and Johanna Leung for a session of mindful painting to music! We’ll provide all the materials, just drop in! Suitable for families.
  • Saturday 26 October @ Central Library, 2-4pm: Learn how to weave using African fabrics with Nayna! Suitable for families. Free, just drop in!
  • Mindfulness, Painting & Music Workshop – Join Tina Ramos Ekongo (art) and Johanna Leung (music). In this session families will submerge in art, relax in the soundscape and create art without boundaries. This workshop is suitable for children and Adults. Workshop duration: 2 hours. Drop in – at the following venues: 
    • Tuesday 22 October – Longsight Library (2-4pm)
    • Wednesday 23 October – Forum Library (2-4pm)
    • Thursday 24 October – Central Library (1pm-3pm)
    • Friday 25 October –  Avenue Library (2-4pm)
