This year, Manchester Libraries proudly hosted special events to mark Anti-Bullying Week 2024, bringing together over 200, KS1 children from across the city.
The theme, “Choose Respect,” was at the heart of the activities, aiming to inspire understanding, kindness, and inclusion among young participants.
Selfie Collages with a Message, by Artist Caroline Coates
Schools were invited to take part in a creative workshop with artist Caroline Coates, where children designed selfie collages adorned with their personal anti-bullying and empathy messages. The activity combined self-expression with a strong sense of community, as children worked together to share their thoughts and ideas.
The collages became a vibrant tapestry of artwork and words, filled with phrases like:
- “Allow people to be unique!”
- “Stop Bullying.”
- “We’re stronger when we stand together.”
Why Focus on Empathy?
November is Empathy Action Month. Empathy is a powerful tool in tackling bullying, as it encourages children to understand the feelings of others and build positive relationships. By incorporating this theme into creative activities, children were not only engaged but also educated on how small acts of kindness can have a significant impact.
Highlights of the Day
- Collaboration and Teamwork: Children worked in groups, fostering a sense of camaraderie and collective responsibility.
- Empathy Discussions: Caroline led short discussions on what empathy means and how children can practice it daily.
- Showcasing Creativity: Each selfie collage was unique, showcasing the individuality and creativity of every participant which will be displayed in their school.
Looking Forward
The enthusiasm during the events highlights the importance of continuing such initiatives. The selfie collages will be displayed in schools throughout the city as a reminder of the children’s commitment to kindness and empathy.
By empowering young people with the tools to stand up against bullying and encouraging them to practice empathy, Manchester Libraries is fostering a more inclusive and supportive community for all.
Here’s to celebrating every child’s unique voice and working together to create a kinder world. 🌟
Stay tuned for more events and initiatives at Manchester Libraries that inspire, educate, and bring our communities closer together.
