Join #Take10toRead for Mental Health on October 10

It’s that time of the year again folks, when we make sure to find time to switch off from the hustle and bustle of life, by emphasising the importance of taking 10 minutes out of the day to read. The Take 10 to Read campaign promotes wellbeing and positive mental health by encouraging the nation to reap the benefits that just 10 minutes of reading a day can bring – relaxation, reducing stress, happiness, empathy, escapism…and that’s just for starters. Cultivating a regular reading habit has long lasting mental health benefits for both children and adults.

Which is why Read Manchester and Manchester Libraries invite you to spend a #Take10toRead moment at 10 am (or any suitable time, make it work for you) on 10th October, World Mental Health Day. You can choose anything you like to immerse yourself in reading, a book, magazine article or even a recipe, if it brings a moment of calm. Parents can share a fun story together and connect with their little ones. Promote the Take 10 campaign at work or community centre by setting up a bookshelf, reading club or encouraging your employer to register for the Take10 pledge here

Following on from the success of last year’s Take 10 big book give away, the Read Manchester team and Literacy Champions will once again attend The Christie with armfuls of free books to hand out on October 10th. Over 1,300 books were gifted to patients and staff, transporting them to their own Take 10 place of relaxation. Read more here

Teachers can get involved by encouraging their pupils to Take 10 to read for pleasure at home, as well as sign up for free online author sessions and classroom resources courtesy of The National Literacy Trust. More information can be found by visiting the website.
