Read On – the new app to help build a lasting reading habit

The new Read On app guides you through a personalised adventure in books. Explore recommendations, meet challenges, and find your local literary haven—all in one place.

The app takes inspiration from the ‘Couch to 5k’ fitness plan and aims to get people reading more.

Reading for good health

Research shows that reading for pleasure can reduce stress and depression, increase self-esteem and improve ability to cope with difficult situations. Adults who read for just 30 minutes a week are 20% more likely to report greater life satisfaction. The app goes live just in time for the summer holidays, when people read to relax, and aims to turn the “beach read” into a year-round habit.

The app was made possible by funding from the LibraryOn grant programme. Supported by Arts Council England and facilitated by the British Library.
