This year, Manchester Central Library celebrates 90 years since its grand opening by King George V on 17 July 1934 – a special event attended by thousands (pictured above). We plan to mark this historic occasion with activities on Wednesday 17 July and with a cultural extravaganza during Festival of Libraries Week on Sunday 16 June, celebrating the old and the new and the venue’s many highlights and successes over the past 90 years
To celebrate what Central Library means to the people of the city and all the wonderful things achieved through the years, we are hosting an extra special occasion for Manchester families on Sunday 16 June; a fun day packed with creative and cultural activities, including music, crafts, performances and an exhibition exploring the rich history of the venue through our fabulous archives.
To help us deliver this extra special day on Sunday 16 June, Manchester Central Library Development Trust (reg charity no. 1150161), the charity that supports all the great additional cultural, eduacation and archival work of Manchester Libraries, welcomes support from public donations and local companies. Donations will help fund performers, local freelance artists and musicians to deliver an enhanced programme for the day.
The Trust’s fundraising efforts for the 90th celebrations were recently boosted by generous grants from The Granada Foundation and The Duchy of Lancaster Benevolent Fund.
