Celebrating Green Libraries Week

Get Ready for Green Libraries Week! 7-13 October 2024

It’s back! Green Libraries Week returns this October, and it’s all about celebrating libraries with a focus on climate and sustainability. We’ve got a packed schedule of free events and activities, so there’s something for everyone!

What’s on? You’ll find archive handling sessions, an inspiring author talk, and hands-on workshops. Need some energy-saving tips? We’ve got you covered. Feeling crafty? Join us for eco-friendly craft activities. Plus, don’t miss the Fun Palace, hear from successful green businesses, and have a chat with a climate officer to find out what they’re all about.


Saturday 5 October

This Years Fun Palaces – All About Creativity

North City Library, 2pm to 4pm

Join us for an afternoon packed with fun and creativity! Get hands-on by making your own cress garden, take part in a lively musical workshop, and explore your imagination with a writing activity. Plus, learn about recycling and the climate while you’re here!


Monday 7 October

We’re Kicking Off Green Libraries Week with Emma Reynolds!

On Monday, 7th October, Manchester school pupils will meet Emma Reynolds, author-illustrator of Drawn to Change the World. They’ll discover how young activists like Autumn Peltier and Edgar Edmund Tarimo are making a difference worldwide through clean water and less plastic. Plus, students will join a comic-making workshop to explore how imagination and art can transform our future. An inspiring start to the week!


Tuesday 8 October

Preserving the Past for a Greener Future

Ground Floor, Central Library, 11am to 1pm

Join us for a fun, hands-on session where you can explore archive items from our collections! From self-professed polluters of the nineteenth century to activist groups of the 1970s, come and learn how people have interacted with the environment in the past, and see how archives can be used to track changes in the environment over time.



Saturday 12 October

Crafts from Nature

LG Floor, Central Library Children’s Library, 1-3 pm

Green Themes Story Times Across the City

Get ready for a week of eco-friendly storytelling. During Green Libraries Week, all story times across the city will have a special green theme. Find you nearest library story time on our website. We’ll be sharing tales about nature, animals, and how we can take care of our planet. It’s the perfect way to spark a love for nature and learn how we can all make a difference. Bring the kids along and join us for some fun, green-themed story time magic!
