Celebrating World Children’s Day at Manchester Libraries

On 20th November, Manchester Libraries proudly joined the global celebration of World Children’s Day, commemorating the Declaration of the Rights of the Child. This special day reminds us that upholding children’s rights is fundamental to building a better world—today, tomorrow, and into the future.

At Central Library, we welcomed 50 Key Stage 1 children for a joyful event designed to celebrate their creativity and individuality. The day began with creative workshop, where they crafted personalised selfie frames and designed their own crowns. Each craft celebrated their unique qualities, making every child feel special.

After the crafts, the children participated in a a reading of “What We’ll Build” by Oliver Jeffers, a heart warming story inspired by the birth of his daughter. The book explores a parent’s boundless love and the limitless opportunities life holds, sparking the children’s imaginations. The library was filled with smiles, laughter, and plenty of colourful creations, creating an unforgettable atmosphere.

The children also explored the treasures of our Children’s Library, discovering new books and finding inspiration in a space designed just for them. This experience helped foster their love for reading while showcasing the magic of storytelling.

We were thrilled to welcome so many young learners and their teachers to this celebration, offered as part of Manchester Libraries’ free school offer. Listening to children’s voices and encouraging their self-expression is central to our mission, and this event was a beautiful way to honour their ideas, creativity, and aspirations.

Thank you to all the schools who joined us and made the day such a success. We look forward to celebrating World Children’s Day with you again next year!
